Seven Card Stud and Texas Hold 'Em are two variants of the game of poker in which there are 7 cards dealt to the players from which the strongest hand can be chosen at the player's discretion. But unfortunately the similarity of these two games ends there. Many people may interchange the two but the rules are quite different. First off, they come from two different families of poker. The Seven Card comes from the Stud family and the Hold 'Em comes from Community Poker family. This in itself means that the rules and the set up of the games vary quite a bit. The winning though is common, which is true of almost all variants.
The first thing to discuss is the set up of both the games. In the case of hold 'em the dealer only deals two cards to each player in the start of the game. That is the reason why even 12 players can play at the same table when playing hold 'em. In the case of seven card the dealer deals each player three + one + one + one + one cards which is seven in all. This means that up to 7 players can play this game at one table. The cards dealt in the hold 'em are both face down seen only to the player himself. The cards dealt in seven card are two face down and one face up at first, then one face up, again one face up, again one face up and then the last face down. At every point in the hold 'em the players are allowed to look at their hand but in the stud the face down one cannot be opened until the end of the game. In the hold 'em five cards are opened on the table and can be used by all players to make their hands. This is not done in the stud as the cards dealt to the player specifically are the only ones that can be used to make the hand.
The betting rounds too in each game differ. In the hold 'em game the betting is done in the initial phase, the flop phase, the turn phase and the river phase. That means that there are 4 rounds in which the players are allowed to place their bets. In the stud, however, the betting commences in the initially phase, the fourth street, the fifth street, the sixth street and the river phase. This means that in the stud there are 5 rounds in which the bets can be placed. In hold 'em, the player to the left of the dealer must start the first round of bets. But this is not always the case in the stud. In the stud, the player with the lowest face up card must start the betting. This bet is called the bring in.
The winning however is the same in both games wherein the highest hand stakes claim to the pot. The highest hand is computed as a choice of the 5 strongest cards from the seven placed in front of the players.
